- One of my passion is helping people find hope. I think we're in a world now where it's so easy to feel just stuck and feeling like you know, you haven't done what you should have done and whatever. And I'm approaching my 75th birthday, I've been an entrepreneur for 40 years. And I am living proof that you should never give up.
One of the things I like to start out with and this may fit really well with what you just said, being an entrepreneur, a lot of things happen. We got to make a lot of decisions, things like that. If you could go back in time, and you could change one business or life decision, would you change it if you could change it? And if you would change it, what would you change it to?
- Well, I'm a real woman of faith. And I believe that there are no accidents, that everything happens for a reason. And if you wait long enough, it'll turn out to be good. I think the only thing that I knew earlier would have made life probably simpler or more pleasant, was that I grew up with my mother saying to me, you're getting too big for your britches.
And so as a result of that, I often I was in groups where I was exposed to people who were highly successful. But I was afraid to reach out to them. Because I didn't think that I that they would want to pay attention to me. And I think that was I missed an opportunity. So that would be one thing that I would change if I could.
If you could go back and look at the decisions you've made business or life or both. And one that turned out super positive. It's kind of like you look at it, it's kind of like a dividing point. You look at everything before that. And then everything after that. Do you have one of those?
- Oh, absolutely. There's one that's that no question. And that is I started my business in the residential organizing industry when no one had ever heard of it. Okay, with a small business administration to ask them to help me start my business. And they told me I was crazy that nobody was organizing closets covers in kitchens. And I think now it's, I don't know, $11 billion industry or something like that. But when I went into homes, I quickly found out the number one challenge was organizing paper. And the question people ask me all the time was how long do you keep? And in those days, it was bank statements, because we used to get our canceled checks back and those big things on envelopes.
I remember those You bet. And people would keep them for decades. And you'd ask them what? And I realized I didn't really know the answer to that question. But I figured it the answer must beat the library. So I went to the library to get a book on how long do you keep bank statements, insurance policies, receipts, and there wasn't one. And so I wrote a book called taming the paper tiger, which became a bestseller. And there's no question that writing a book is one of the best things you can do because it gives you credibility.
And one of the things I love to do is collaborate with others on writing a book. And so most recently, we just launched taming the digital Tiger Gmail edition, which I wrote with one of my certified consultants, she did the major work, but it was based on my intellectual property. And so we did it together. And I have two other people doing that now. So if anybody listening wants to write a book, that you feel stuck, I would be more than happy to have a conversation because I believe it's the most important thing you can do a business.
